Trou Aux Cerfs

Trou aux Cerfs (also known as Volcan de Murr) is a dormant volcano with a well-defined cone and crater. It is 605 m (1,985 ft) high and is located in Curepipe – Floréal, Mauritius. The crater has been alternately described as being 300 and 350 meters in diameter and 80 meters deep. You will especially appreciate approaching the hole by leaning a little. This crater is not bubbling with lava, but rather invites reflection and quietude. The bottom of the hole is a quiet little lake.

Unlike typical volcanic features, the Trou aux Cerfs crater is surrounded by a large area of lush forest with native plant species and some giant green pines. Trou aux Cerfs is believed to have erupted once and been dormant for the past 700,000 years. According to experts, the volcano could become active at any time over the next thousand years.
Undoubtedly, one of the main highlights is the 360 degree view of the city, Curepipe, and the majestic view of the Rempart mountain, the Trois Mamelles and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.

This verdant sanctuary is a favorite jogging spot for locals. It has become a place of socialization where you can find local joggers every day in the morning, around 05:00. There is also a wooden gazebo where you can sit, relax and of course enjoy the unparalleled natural beauty. It can get a bit chilly due to the surrounding woods and the height, so a light sweater or shawl can be brought.

The crater is only accessible by a steep embankment considered dangerous. Water and silt have clogged the crater, making it even less accessible.
